RIC User Agreement

 1. Access and Authorization

Consultations

Only authorized users in good standing may request consultations and commission projects from RIC staff. (Initial consultations may occur while authorization is still pending.) Users requesting consultations or commissioning work must be familiar with the Acknowledgment Policy (section 2).
Shop Access
Only authorized users in good standing may enter the shop, use tools and machines, or borrow parts and equipment. Shop hours are 8am – 6pm, Monday through Friday. No after-hours access.
Users must sign up for a time slot on PPMS when using the shop.
Laser Cutter, Soldering, and Power Tools
Users must be trained by a member of the RIC staff before they can use the laser cutter, soldering station or use power tools (e.g., drills, belt sander, chop saw).
Login Credentials
Every user must have their own shop account (PPMS system) with their own log-in credentials. Sharing of login credentials is forbidden.
Borrowing
Nothing may be taken or borrowed from the shop without explicit approval from the shop staff. The only exceptions are small, inexpensive items like screws, resistors, and scrap plastic which may be used in reasonable quantities. Please report shortages to shop staff or replenish in kind.

2. Acknowledgments & Authorship

Acknowledgment
If the Core contributed substantially to any of your scientific results, you must acknowledge this in corresponding publications. Please enter the publication to our database using your shop PPMS account (in the 'Publications' tab).
Authorship
In cases where RIC staff made significant intellectual contributions to the scientific content, conceptual design, or data analysis of a research project, please consider authorship by RIC staff (though this is not required).

3. Safety

When operating any power tool you must:
- Wear safety glasses
- Tie back long hair
- Avoid loose fitting clothes or jewelry
- Never leave any machine running unattended.
- Never attempt to brake or slow a machine with your hand or any other implement.
- Keep the machine and your work area clean.
If you are using a machine in a way that is novel to you, you must ask a Core staff member for assistance or training. If you are ever unsure about any operation, you must stop and ask for help.
Respect the other users of the shop. Make certain everyone has enough space to work safely. If you see any unsafe activity, immediately (but politely) inform the operator and report the event to the shop administrator.
Immediately comply with any safety instructions spoken by the staff.

4. Courtesy

All users must demonstrate respect for the other shop users and administrators.
Users should report unsafe conditions, and report when stock is running low.
Because the shop is an educational and creative environment, people will make mistakes and break things. However, if you break something or notice something is broken, you must report it to a shop administrator.
All users must clean up their space before leaving the shop:
- Put away all parts and tools.
- Sweep or vacuum any chips, shavings, wire strippings, etc. from your work space.
- Ask for permission from shop administrators if you wish to leave a project or materials in the shop overnight.
- Aim to leave the shop cleaner than when you entered.
